What, it’s already Thursday again? Wow, these weeks are flying by fast. Which is a good thing for me. I have a child that is ready for summer time so they no longer have to go to school (I can hear it in my head…man, I’m so ready for summer, I’m tired of school, I just want it to be done, so I can relax), then I have my other kid, Molly who is ready for school to be done, so she can play with her friends. Wait…did you guys catch that little joke. I said I have a child who is ready for school to be done, then I also have my other kid Molly. Did you get it? HA HA. That was my attempt at humor.
However, it’s so true around this house though. Molly and Brett are both ready for school to be done. Brett has been going to school for forever, and will be done with his Bachelors Degree in Finance in May!! Wahoo! He also has a degree in Accounting, but I personally think he likes Finance more. Why do you ask? Well, b/c Accounting around here means, you get to be my personal accountant and take care of my taxes. He hates tax time. He hates dealing with my taxes, and likes to remind me that they’re a pain in HIS butt. Yea, how do you think I like them Brett? He’s great though. He complains, but does them anyways. He did however ask me how much I was going to pay him next year…I politely told him I will get him a pass to go with me to a convention next year. Lol.
So…..onto the really fun part of Thursday. The feature. While talking to a friend today, she asked who I was featuring. I said: “I’m not telling you”. I like to keep them secret until Thursday. I feel it helps the excitement. I do have another fabulous photographer today. She does amazing work, and there is one image in particular that I love. It just speaks to me. All of these photographers that I have featured so far, are rock stars, and the inspiration they give is amazing. Their work fascinates me, and their personalities are WONDERFUL. So, let’s meet this rock star!
Meet….
Brooke Beasley Engstrom – Brooke Beasley Photography
Bay Area / Central Valley California Photographer
www.brookebeasleyphotography.com
Where are you from? Where do you currently live?
I was born in Illinois and now I live in the middle of the East Bay and Central Valley CA
What does photography mean to you? What attracted you to photography?
Photography means freedom for me. I am able to freely express my creative side and share it! I have always been around photography, growing up my uncle was featured in National Geographic and I have always played around with it. I love giving something to others that they can enjoy for years to come.
Describe the area of photography you specialize in? Why did you choose this area?
I don’t really specialize in any one thing. I am still working on deciding that. I really love seniors and kids, but I love seeing people in love at weddings….see I can’t decide
(This is my favorite image that I was talking about. You can tell this couple is in love, and the colors are gorgeous. Nice, calm, and beautiful. )

How long have you been a photographer?
Professionally? I am starting my 3rd year.
Are you self taught or have you attended formal schooling? What workshops/seminars have you found useful to you?
I am self taught and also friend taught haha. I love researching everything and I believe you can find almost anything through practice and research. I have never been to a “workshop” just a class here and there.
Morning or night owl?
NIGHT OWL!!!
If you could describe your style of photography in 4 words, what would they be?
Clean, Fun, Real and Pure
Who is your family? Include some pictures of them since we all know that our family is always in our photographs.
I have two boys Brenton and Barrett or Brent and Bear and an amazing hubby, Travis

What is a project that you would like to do this year with your photography?
Actually FINISH my 52 week project!
How do you balance work, and your family?
I am still working on that! I’ll let ya know when I get it all figured out!
We all want to know…what’s in YOUR bag? What lens could you not live without?
I shoot with a 5D MarkII. I usually shoot with a 24-70 but my true love in a 50 1.2.
If you could photograph any person in the world, who would it be? Why?
Annie L…….mostly because I could hopefully absorb some of her talent and wisdom through our shoot, lol.
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be?
Probably a hairstylist or designer of some sort.
What are 4 words your husband would use to describe you?
Creative, fun, loyal, and maybe a little crazy. Haha
What helps keep you motivated with photography?
Trying new things and making myself shoot even when I don’t feel like it.

Tell us about some of your long term goals (with photography or personal life)?
I want to be able to find more what my favorite things are to shoot and really cater my business around that. I also want to be able to set myself apart from photography when I am not working and focus more on family. Learning to balance is really gonna come in handy!
What blogs do you love to stalk (doesn’t have to be photography related if you don’t want)?
Well, I always read The Maternal Lens…I always enter to win their awesome contests, but I lose.
I look at too many photography blogs for sure, which can make you go crazy on self doubt! I also love reading about my awesome friends and keeping up with their blogs.
When you’re not shooting, what are you doing?
Being a mom, editing, cleaning…it’s all very glamorous, lol.
Where is one place you would love to travel to?
Bora Bora. I am a sunshine kinda girl so anywhere warm is my style!

What is one thing that you want to do in your life?
I have so many things I want to do, I guess a big one would be to have more kids.
What is a quote that means a lot to you?
I have the worst memory when it comes to remembering quotes. There is one that I like and I can’t even remember how it goes but something along the lines of
“Say what you mean and mean what you say.”
If you could pick one photographer in the world to do a session for you, and your family, who would it be and why?
Oh really? Ahhhh I have so many fabulous friends that I swap with and I love all their images. I might say Barb from Jinky Art because I want to see how she catches all that magical light. For the most part I just want someone to be able to capture who “we” are and I really love any photos someone can get of my boys together because I never can!
If you could photograph one area of photography for a day, what would it be, why? (Something other than what you photograph, i.e. architecture, food, boudoir, birth, etc.)
I really would love to be on some over the top Vanity Fair photo shoot someday. Even if I’m just a fly on the wall.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting out in photography, what would it be?
To really know yourself. This is tough industry and you need to know your art and stand by it. This is something I struggle with but I have also gotten stronger because of it.
What magazine could you not live without?
To be honest, I don’t really read a ton of magazines but I do look at Vogue, Vanity Fair and Elle for posing inspiration, but if I see a US Weekly or People I have to read it haha.
Please include some of your favorite images….

Once again, this week featured another fabulous photographer. In this industry, I have the opportunity to meet tons of fascinating people. When I say that, I’m talking about everyone I come in contact with…clients, other photographers, vendors, etc. I meet tons of people online, and always hope to one day meet them in person. Brooke is no exception. She is a fabulous gal. She totally cracks me up with the things she says, and is a huge inspiration to me. So she is now another photographer that has been added to my list of hopeful meet-ups. Brooke, thanks so much for being featured this week. It was a ton of fun, and I loved seeing your images. Thanks again, and keep rockin’!

Hello Hello! It’s Thursday! Which means…we’re one day away from the weekend, AND….it’s time for a new featured photographer. However, this week we have a special surprise. Our featured photographer is actually 2 featured photographers. Why is that, you ask? Well, b/c they are an awesome mother-daughter team! Oh yes, they are a team. They shoot together, they hang out together, and they finish each others sentences. They have an awesome relationship, one that I think is amazing. I’ve never been able to meet these wonderful ladies in person, but am friends with them through the internet world. They are fun, sweet, and I love them to pieces.
So, I’m sure I have you all wondering who these wonderful ladies are, so let’s introduce them! Please welcome….
DeAnna and Iliana Arevalo – Arevalo Photography
St.Louis, Missouri Photographers
Where are you from? Where do you currently live?
DeAnna/Iliana: We are both originally from Pennsylvania and currently live in Missouri.
What does photography mean to you? What attracted you to photography?
DeAnna: I started out like so many others by taking pictures of Iliana for her scrapbooks. My interest gradually grew but it wasn’t until 2 years ago that I actually started studying. To me, photography is an art that helps us preserve our precious memories, freezing a moment in time we can have forever.
Iliana: To me, photography is a way to express myself and be creative.
Describe the area of photography you specialize in? Why did you choose this area?
DeAnna: I guess I would have to say seniors because Iliana is around that age allowing me to really hone my skills with that age set.
Iliana: I don’t feel that I really specialize in anything yet. I’m still trying to find what feels right and what I feel confidant doing.

How long have you been a photographer?
DeAnna: I have been in business for 1.5 years now.
Iliana: I was interested in the editing first, I still am. That’s my favorite part. I just recently started picking up the camera and shooting things.
Are you self taught or have you attended formal schooling? What workshops/seminars have you found useful to you?
DeAnna: I am self taught, learning a lot together with Iliana. Being a part of online photography forums has been essential as there a lot of great photographers out there so willing to help.
Iliana: I learned everything with my mom. I haven’t attended any workshops or seminars yet.
Morning or night owl?
DeAnna: Morning is my most productive time.
Iliana: Night Owl! No question. I could stay up until 1 or 2 in the morning if my parents would let me.
If you could describe your style of photography in 4 words, what would they be?
DeAnna: Fresh, clean, casual, hip
Iliana: Fun, artistic, carefree and simple.
Who is your family? Include some pictures of them since we all know that our family is always in our photographs.
DeAnna/Iliana: The 2 of us along with husband/dad Santiago and our dog Riley. (I will get a family picture of this awesome family and come back and post it later).

What is a project that you would like to do this year with your photography?
DeAnna: I would love to be able to make the time to put all my personal digital photos into digital scrapbooks.
Iliana: I’m working on doing a 365 blog. Whether it be a picture taken with my camera or with my phone, I would really like to be able to go back through my blog and remember what I did throughout this year.
How do you balance work, and your family?
DeAnna: I am so blessed that Iliana shares an interest in this. It really encompasses family, work and school time together. We balance out with fun things like going to see her favorite bands in concerts.
Iliana: I don’t work yet and we incorporate some of my schooling with photography, making the balance a little easier.
We all want to know…what’s in YOUR bag? What lens could you not live without?
DeAnna: I have a Canon 50D and my 85 1.8. That’s it. Hoping to go full frame with a Canon 135L this year.
Iliana: My camera, of course, a Canon 50D and my Sigma 30 mm lens. I always have a pack of gum, extra SD cards and I try and keep a pen in there but I always end up taking it out and never putting it back.
I only have one lens right now, but I’m working on saving up for a 100 macro and when I get it that I already know it will be my favorite.
If you could photograph any person in the world, who would it be? Why?
DeAnna: This is Iliana answering for her, because she won’t admit it. LL Cool J.
Iliana: Can I have two answers? I would absolutely LOVE to do a photoshoot with my favorite band, One Direction and my favorite artist, Taylor Swift. They all seem like such down to earth people and I would love the opportunity to meet them and get to take pictures of them.
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be?
DeAnna: I would more than likely still be doing medical transcription at home.
Iliana: I don’t know really know, I’m only 15. So I’m honestly still trying to figure out what I for sure what I want to do. Right now, I want to be a photographer but that could change.

What are 4 words your husband would use to describe you?
DeAnna: Loyal, committed, great mother.
Iliana: N/A
What helps keep you motivated with photography?
DeAnna: There is still so much to learn and that alone is a great motivator. Pair that with all of the inspiration you can find online and I could be doing photography related stuff all day!
Iliana: I get so inspired looking at other photography blogs and would love to be like Bobb+Mike or Matt and Katie, but I know I have SO much to learn.
Tell us about some of your long term goals (with photography or personal life)?
DeAnna: Would love to be able to travel more for both photography and personal reasons rolled into one.
Iliana: I would really like to be a concert photographer. To me, that would be the coolest job in the world.
What blogs do you love to stalk (doesn’t have to be photography related if you don’t want)?
DeAnna: It really depends what kind of shoots are coming up. (I told you in question 15 that I could do this all day so consider yourself warned….)

Iliana: Canada and The UK.
What is one thing that you want to do in your life?
DeAnna: Make a difference.
Iliana: Iliana is just trying to figure out how to get to Texas to meet all the awesome Texans.
This was posted by Melanie.
21) What is a quote that means a lot to you?
DeAnna:
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.
Iliana:
‘There’s more to life than just to live’ Yes, this is a Jonas Brothers lyric.
If you could pick one photographer in the world to do a session for you, and your family, who would it be and why?
Iliana: Bobbi+Mike. No Question.
DeAnna: Since I am so much more comfortable behind the camera and personally a pose-a-phobic, I would think Tara Whitney’s style would be the most relaxing for me. And since Iliana picked Bobbi+Mike I’ll get to be included in her session too. I think a session with them would be non-stop laughter which translates to relaxing for me.
If you could photograph one area of photography for a day, what would it be, why? (Something other than what you photograph, i.e. architecture, food, boudoir, birth, etc.)
DeAnna: The streets/culture of El Salvador capturing the memories for my husband while giving Iliana and me a peek into where he is from.
Iliana: Band shoots, for CD covers and stuff like that.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting out in photography, what would it be?
DeAnna: Practice, practice, practice.
Iliana:
What magazine could you not live without?
DeAnna: I am not really a magazine reader. I clip coupons. Does that count?
Iliana: I don’t really read magazines. haha
Please include some of your favorite images….

DeAnna and Iliana, thanks so much for being featured! I loved getting to know you guys even more, and had a blast reading your answers to the interviews. So, DeAnna….you like LL Cool J, eh? I think he would be a blast to photograph too.
So now we need to start planning a trip for you guys to come down to fabulous Texas.
I know there are quite a few of us Texans that would have a blast meeting you guys in person. Thanks again for being featured, and thanks for being such great gals.
Keep on rockin’ your team biz.

Our featured photographer this week is a photographer that I met through one of my forums that I’m a part of. She was so excited to do this, and it was great to see that she was! She’s a fantastic photographer and a hilarious gal! Keep the keys out of the freezer!
I’m excited for her to be featured this week, and for all of you to meet and read about her! So…let’s not keep her in the dark much longer. Meet…
Michelle Massey Barnes – Michelle Massey Barnes Photography
www.masseybarnesphotography.com
Ann Arbor, Michigan Photographer
Where are you from? Where do you currently live? I grew up on the West side of Michigan, traveled a lot through out college, went to grad school out East and ended up back in Michigan. Now I am more on the Southeast side of the state, not to far West of Ann Arbor.
What does photography mean to you? What attracted you to photography? Photography is an artistic expression of beauty. I feel like each time I photograph someone I am given the opportunity to capture that person’s essence and that person’s beauty. But it gets better. Then I get to show the person the beauty and the light that I saw in them while I was behind the camera. I love the way that a beautiful photograph can make someone see themselves and their loved ones with new and fresh eyes.
Describe the area of photography you specialize in? Why did you choose this area? I love photographing high school seniors. I think they are so much fun and full of ambition. They are usually very willing to be themselves in front of the camera. I also love photographing young children. I think babies are so special and I have never met a baby that I haven’t loved. LOL. Raising a young child can be so challenging. I love giving the parents beautiful photographs that help them remember the joy of parenting and the beauty of their child. When times are hard (and sometimes they are so all of us), it can be tough to remember just how much joy a child brings into our lives. I think that images that capture the beauty of each stage freeze time for parents and give them a chance to see the joy without all of the tantrums, melts downs and hard work. Parents get to revel in the beautiful moments of loving their children.

How long have you been a photographer? When I was a young girl, my mom got a Canon AE1. Although I loved it and followed her everywhere while she was using it, I didn’t want to learn how to use it myself. It wasn’t until much later when I moved to Southeast Michigan and fell in love with Sandhill Cranes that I felt myself pulled into photography. More than anything I wanted to learn how to photograph these beautiful birds that live out here.
So my real journey as a photographer began about seven years ago and it focused mostly around nature photography. I love photographing the ebb and flow of nature and the seasons. I love returning to the same place over and over again and each time seeing it through different eyes. Nature has taught me to never take a moment for granted. You can’t go back the next day and expect to have the exact same experience. The clouds won’t be the same, the lighting will have changes, the field full of wildflowers might be past their bloom. The same is true in life. Soak it in as it is happening.
As you can imagine, I don’t have a lot of quiet time in the woods these days. I am sure I will return to my roots, but most of my work is portrait based right now. I can say though, the beauty that I am seeking to capture in people is the exact same type of beauty I captured in natural world. A true, authentic and pure beauty of just being yourself.
Are you self taught or have you attended formal schooling? What workshops/seminars have you found useful to you? I have a lot of formal schooling– a masters degree in comparative religion from Harvard Divinity School– but not in photography. My time in grad school did teach me how to research, how to teach myself, and how to find all of the resources that I need to accomplish whatever it is I have my heart set on. Right now, my heart is set on my camera.
Morning or night owl? Night owl. For sure. I love to be up with the moon & stars.
If you could describe your style of photography in 4 words, what would they be? Emotional. Authentic. Artistic. Vibrant.
Who is your family? Include some pictures of them since we all know that our family is always in our photographs. My husband, my son Logan (6), and my daughter Annabelle (2.5). Love you guys!

What is a project that you would like to do this year with your photography? Each year my husband and I take our kids camping in the mountains. We are even planning to try a backpacking trip this year.
As you can imagine, I have so many photos. I would love to write about camping with children and teaching children to love nature. I would love to get some of these photographs published. {And I am open to suggestions on places that might want a submission or two of this kind of work!}
How do you balance work, and your family? The honest answer is some days I balance them better than others. It’s hard. I miss out on sleep & sometimes on showers. I don’t read as much as I would like to. I think this is true of all parents though. Not just working parents. I do block out Sundays as a special time to spend with my husband. We go climbing at Planet Rock. I do my best to make sure I have special time with my kids each week.
We all want to know…what’s in YOUR bag? What lens could you not live without? I shoot with a Canon 50D. I have a 50mm 1.8 (which I love), an 85mm 1.8 & a 16-35 2.8 L. Although I love shooting prime, I enjoying playing with the way that a wide angle lens can bend images.
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be? Well, in addition to being a photographer, I am also a yoga instructor and a birth doula. As a doula, I get to work with families prenatally and then support them during the birth of their children. It is amazing work- both to be supporting such a precious rite of passage and to be present at the birth of a child. If I wasn’t a photographer, I would keep doing this work.

What are 4 words your husband would use to describe you? Well, I asked him. He’s what he said, “Motivated. Intelligent. A good mother. Creative.” When I told him that I was a surprised that he didn’t say stubborn and strong willed, he laughed and said, “Well that goes without saying.” LOL, that too.
What helps keep you motivated with photography? There is always something new to learn and I can always find places where I can improve. I am the kind of person that thrives on challenge and personal improvement. I love learning and having the opportunity to explore something new and continue to get better at it is all the motivation I need. I love it. If I ever run out of things to learn, it will be time to look for a new passion.Tell us about some of your long term goals (with photography or personal life)? We have spent many camping trips at Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. Long’s Peak in the tallest peak in this park and the mountain dominates the skyline. It is a 16 mile hike to the top and back and you have to begin the hike at 2am so you are off the summit before the risk of afternoon thunderstorms. Our goal is to climb it as a family. We will have to wait until Annabelle can carry her own pack. Right now, she rides in mine.

What blogs do you love to stalk (doesn’t have to be photography related if you don’t want)? I spend so much time looking at blogs that I could be a major, major stalker. But I’m not consistent. I jump around a lot. I love to be inspired by others people’s work and seeing all of the variations in vision and execution keeps me feeling creative. So I have a slew of blog bookmarks and I jump around all the time.
When you’re not shooting, what are you doing? Climbing rock walls at Planet Rock, an indoor climbing gym in Ann Arbor. I am wishing I was climbing somewhere in Colorado but Planet Rock is a close enough second to keep me happy. I also love hiking, biking and exploring nature with my kids. I used to love watching (and photographing) birds. Until some quiet time returns, I won’t be doing that so much.
What is one thing that you want to do in your life? This is random, but I would like to have a bird of prey (an owl or a hawk), fly across a field and land on my fist. Yes, of course it would have to be a trained bird and of course I would want to wear a glove. Hum. I need to find my way to falconer.
If you could pick one photographer in the world to do a session for you, and your family, who would it be and why? Pick just one photographer?? Really?? There is so much talent out there. I do love love Angie Moson of Simplicity Photography. I love the way her work is influenced by the colors of the landscape in Utah. I love the bright colors, the way she plays with light and the expressions that she captures. I love her processing.
If you could photograph one area of photography for a day, what would it be, why? (Something other than what you photograph, i.e. architecture, food, boudoir, birth, etc.) I would like to spend a day photographing from the summit of a mountain. I would love 24 hours dedicated to exploring the light and shadows across the vista as the sun moved up and over the mountain and then back down. And of course the light of the moon and stars. The moonrise on a mountain top is magical.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting out in photography, what would it be?
Find your passion. Even when you are not sure exactly what it is, look for it. If you make a conscious effort to find what you are passionate about, you will know when you are there. You will love what you are feeling.
Please include some of your favorite images….

Thank you so much Michelle for being a featured photographer! It was a blast getting to know you better and also learn what interests you about photography and life in general! Your work is fabulous!
Thanks again!

Okay, so yesterday was supposed to be the day for this fabulous feature. However, with a crazy day that was yesterday, and me not getting home until 5 yesterday afternoon, it didn’t happen. So it’s going up today. I’ve managed to finally get sick with all this stupid changing weather that South Texas has had, and let me tell you..it’s not fun. Lucky for me, the hubby was home this morning, but now has to go into work, so I have to pull myself out of the nice, warm, bed and be a mom.
On top of that, we were let out of school today due to “snow”. I’m still wondering where that snow is.
So…today’s feature is a fabulous and ubber talented gal who I love to pieces. She has been a huge help to me throughout my photographic journey, and I also like to call on her when I need some design help. She was the fabulous person behind all of my marketing pieces, and also the fabulous gal behind my logo. Love her to pieces I tell you. She’s also a lot of fun to talk to just about “stuff.” Hopefully one day I get a chance to meet this beautiful lady, she rocks!
I’m assuming you would like to meet this photographer now, eh? Well, here she is…

If you could photograph one area of photography for a day, what would it be, why? (Something other than what you photograph, i.e. architecture, food, boudoir, birth, etc.)
I would love to try boudoir photography for a day…there’s nothing better than making someone look and feel like they are the most beautiful person in the world!
If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting out in photography, what would it be?
Practice, practice, practice!
What magazine could you not live without?
I’m not really a magazine kind of girl. Gasp but I do get a couple, but certainly can live without them.
Please include some of your favorite images….

Farrah it was a blast to be able to have you featured on my website. You’re an inspiration to me in so many ways. You totally rock! Thanks again for being the featured photographer. Leave Farrah and the post some love. We all know how much we love to leave love! Alright, it’s off to make lunch for the kiddos, and then have a movie day. That’s about all mommy is good for today.
